A Godalming resident, who lost a leg in an accident involving a truck eight years ago, has climbed to the top of Kilimanjaro to celebrate his 60th birthday.

In May 2008, Chris Arthey and his wife Denise were touring southern Texas by motorbike when a truck veered into their lane and hit them at 80mph.

The pair were taken by helicopter to the nearest trauma unit where Mr Arthey was in a coma for three weeks. Both he and his wife lost their left legs in the accident.

“Surprisingly, we have felt no bitterness toward the drunk driver and that helped us put our energy into our recovery,” said Mrs Arthey.

Mr Arthey, a keen athlete, had completed the big five world marathons prior to the accident – and a year and a half after the accident, Mr Arthey received his prosthetic running leg and was determined to get back to marathon training.
