Escape the winter blues and while away an evening on a colourful tropical island, with Godalming Operatic Society’s production of Utopia, Limited.
Utopia, Limited was Gilbert and Sullivan’s penultimate collaboration in which Gilbert satirises almost every English institution. It is set on the vibrant South Sea island of Utopia. King Paramount, the autocratic ruler of Utopia, has sent his daughter, Princess Zara, to England to learn about English ways and customs, with the intention of modernising Utopia. She returns with six “Flowers of Progress” (gentlemen who represent the Great & Good of England) to explain English culture and institutions. One of the Flowers is a company promoter, who suggests to the King that Utopia becomes a limited company. The King agrees, with hilarious and unforeseen results… The humour is just as funny and relevant now as when it was first written.
Be sure not to miss this rarely-performed gem. The production will be fully staged with spectacular sets and costumes and accompanied by a 24-piece professional orchestra.
Performance will run from the 18-21 February 2026 with a start time of 7.30pm at The Borough Hall, Godalming.
