Our next monthly lecture will be given in French by Dr Bruno Levasseur.
La Courneuve, a suburb less than 10 kilometres from Paris, has often made the headlines. Dr Levasseur will look behind the sensationalist portrayals and trace the history of this emblematic commune. It has been through market gardens, factories and shanty towns, and then the rise of the grands ensembles, the housing estates that symbolised modernity. The spectacular demolition of its towers and blocks has opened up a new landscape and pointed towards a different future.
The talk is an illustrated stroll through the streets and avenues of La Courneuve, asking what that future might look like.
Where: Central Godalming (good free parking in the evening). The talk is also available via Zoom, with the link emailed to members.
